INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SITUATION REPORT
MONDAY JUNE 9, 2003 - 0530 MDT
NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS LEVEL 2


CURRENT SITUATION:

Initial attack activity was light nationally with 83 new fires reported.
One large fire was contained in the Southwest Area. Very high to extreme
fire indices were reported in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New
Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah.

SOUTHWEST AREA LARGE FIRES:

THOMAS, Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. A Type 2 Incident Management
Team (Kvale) is assigned. This fire is burning in ponderosa pine 20 miles
south of Alpine, AZ. Active fire behavior with torching was observed
yesterday. Crews will continue to construct and improve control lines and
burnout indirect lines today. Rugged terrain and heavy fuel loading are
hampering containment efforts.

DRY LAKES COMPLEX, Gila National Forest. A Fire Use Management Team (Rath)
is assigned. This lightning caused Wildland Fire Use Complex is 27 miles
northwest of Silver City, NM and is being managed to accomplish resource
objectives. The complex consists of the Dry, Lake, Sycamore and Moonshine
fires and is burning in pinyon and ponderosa pine, brush and juniper. The
fires continued to back down slope in heavy fuels yesterday. Continued
aerial monitoring of the complex is planned for today.

MORMON, Coconino National Forest. The fire is near Padre Canyon, AZ and is
burning in pinyon pine. The fire remains in confinement status. Torching
and spotting were observed yesterday. Aerial reconnaissance of the fire
will continue today.
