INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SITUATION REPORT
TUESDAY JUNE 24, 2003 - 0530 MDT
NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS LEVEL 2


CURRENT SITUATION:

Initial attack activity was light nationally with 120 new fires reported.
One new large fire was reported in the Southwest Area. Very high to
extreme fire indices were reported in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada,
New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Utah.

SOUTHWEST AREA LARGE FIRES:

ASPEN, Coronado National Forest. A Type 1 Incident Management Team
(Humphrey) is assigned. This fire is 17 miles northeast of Tucson, AZ near
Mount Lemmon. Extreme, wind driven fire behavior with upslope runs,
isolated torching and short range spotting was observed in mixed conifer,
ponderosa pine and brush. Crews are holding existing fireline with
assistance from aerial resources and performing burn out operations.

PICTURE, Tonto National Forest. A Type 1 Incident Management Team
(Oltrogge) is assigned. This fire is burning in ponderosa pine, chaparral
and juniper ten miles northeast of Tonto Basin, AZ. High winds caused
crowning and medium to short range spotting. Personnel are building
fireline and performing burn out operations on the east flank. Structure
protection is in place.

HELEN'S 2, Saguaro National Park. A Type 2 Incident Management Team
(Raley) is assigned. This lightning caused fire is 23 miles east of
Tucson, AZ. Very active, wind driven fire behavior with group torching and
small crown fires was observed in ponderosa pine, mixed conifer and brush.
Crews are constructing fireline on the northwest and northeast flanks.
Very steep, difficult terrain is hampering suppression efforts.

ASH, Coronado National Forest. A Type 2 Incident Management Team (Bradley)
is assigned. This fire is 15 miles southeast of Sierra Vista, AZ burning
in grass and oak woodland. Active fire behavior with some torching was
observed. Crews will complete and hold a burn out operation, and continue
to secure areas around threatened structures.

JENNY, Gila National Forest. A Type 2 Incident Management Team (Mullinex)
has been ordered. This lightning caused fire is located 18 miles northwest
of Truth or Consequences, NM burning in mixed conifer, pinyon pine, grass
and oak.

DRY LAKE COMPLEX, Gila National Forest. A Fire Use Management Team
(Goheen) is assigned. This lightning caused Wildland Fire Use complex,
comprised of the Dry, Lake, Sycamore and Moonshine fires, is 27 miles
northwest of Silver City, NM. The complex is being managed to accomplish
multiple resource objectives. The fires are burning in pinyon pine,
ponderosa pine, grass and mixed conifer. Very active fire behavior was
observed on the Dry, Lake and Moonshine fires.

POWELL, Grand Canyon National Park. A Fire Use Management Team (Cook) is
assigned. This lightning caused Wildland Fire Use fire is burning in
timber with heavy ground fuels, 23 miles northwest of Grand Canyon
Village, AZ. Active fire behavior with creeping and backing was observed.
Structure protection is in place for one historic cabin.

SECO, Gila National Forest. This fire is burning in mixed conifer, grass
and oak 15 miles southwest of Winston, NM. Moderate to extreme fire
behavior was observed. Steep, rocky terrain and heavy fuels are hampering
containment efforts on the west side of the fire. Crews are preparing for
a burn out operation and dozer line is being constructed.

MONUMENT, Las Vegas District, New Mexico State. This fire is burning in
mixed conifer and oak eight miles northeast of Fort Union National
Monument. Erratic winds and low relative humidity resulted in active fire
behavior. Crews are constructing fireline.

VIRGIN, Santa Fe National Forest. This fire is burning in heavy logging
slash northwest of Jemez Springs, NM. No new information was reported.
