INCIDENT MANAGEMENT SITUATION REPORT
FRIDAY JUNE 27, 2003 - 0530 MDT
NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS LEVEL 2


CURRENT SITUATION:

Initial attack activity was light nationally with 110 new fires reported.
Two new large fires were reported one each in Southern California and the
Southwest Areas. One large fire was contained in the Southwest Area. Very
high to extreme fire indices were reported in Alaska, Arizona, California,
Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and Utah.

SOUTHWEST AREA LARGE FIRES:

MONTANO, Bernalillo District, New Mexico State. A Type 1 Incident
Management Team (Sexton) has been ordered. This fire is burning in Bosque
State Park, five miles northwest of downtown Albuquerque, NM. High winds,
poor access, and heavy fuels are hampering efforts. Numerous residences
and several commercial properties are threatened; structure protection is
in place.

ASPEN, Coronado National Forest. A Type 1 Incident Management Team
(Humphrey) is assigned. This fire is burning in mixed conifer, ponderosa
pine and brush, 17 miles northeast of Tucson, AZ near Mount Lemmon. Crews
continue to construct fireline on the southern portion of the fire.

JENNY, Gila National Forest. A Type 2 Incident Management Team (Mullinex)
is assigned. This lightning caused fire is burning in mixed conifer,
pinyon pine, grass and oak, 18 miles northwest of Truth or Consequences,
NM. Moderate to extreme fire behavior was observed. Crews will begin
direct attack on the north flank, and hold the west flank.

DRY LAKE COMPLEX, Gila National Forest. A Fire Use Management Team
(Goheen) is assigned. This lightning caused Wildland Fire Use complex,
comprised of the Dry Lake, Sycamore and Moonshine fires, is 27 miles
northwest of Silver City, NM. The complex is being managed to accomplish
multiple resource objectives. Efforts continue to protect critical
threatened and endangered fisheries habitat on the Dry Lake Fire.

HELEN'S 2, Saguaro National Park. A Type 2 Incident Management Team
(Raley) is assigned. This lightning caused fire is 23 miles east of
Tucson, AZ. Very active surface fire with isolated torching was observed.
Crews continue to flank the southeast, east, and northeast sections of the
fire.

POWELL, Grand Canyon National Park. A Fire Use Management Team (Cook) is
assigned. This lightning caused Wildland Fire Use fire is burning in
timber with heavy ground fuels, 23 miles northwest of Grand Canyon
Village, AZ. Fire activity, smoke parameters, and weather will continue to
be monitored.

ATRISCO, Bernallio District, New Mexico State. This fire is burning in
riparian forest, near Interstate 40 in Albuquerque, NM. No new information
was reported.

SECO, Gila National Forest. A Type 2 Incident Management Team (Bradley) is
assigned. This fire is burning in mixed conifer, grass and oak, 15 miles
southwest of Winston, NM. Moderate fire behavior was observed. Reduction
in acreage is due to more accurate mapping.

MONUMENT, Las Vegas District, New Mexico State. This fire is burning in
mixed conifer and oak, eight miles northeast of Fort Union National
Monument, NM. Crews will patrol and begin the mopup process along the
perimeter.
